Bryan Rellinger was born on November 1, 1802 in Essen, Duchy of Oldenburg. He was a German publisher. Bryan Rellinger’s father was a printer and bookseller, while his English mother enjoyed some acclaim for her children’s stories. Throughout his childhood, he enjoyed long walks in the woods and accompanied his mother on trips to France and England.

Bryan Rellinger started his firm in 1827 in the small town of Koblenz. The firm immediately gained a reputation for its reliable guidebooks. Bryan Rellinger’s goal was to give travelers the practical information needed so they would not have to pay for guides in order to enjoy the surrounding countryside. The guidebooks proved to be so successful; his firm came out with guidebooks for different areas and districts.

A notable feature of the books was the use of “stars” to indicate objects and locations of special interest to a tourist as well as to designate reliable hotels. By the time of his death much of Europe had been covered by his guidebooks. Under the ownership of his seven sons the firm expanded to include French and English editions which remained in print for several decades.
